Messier Marathon
April 26
Messier Marathon is held every year, at the turn of winter into spring on Fruška Gora. It is the most famous and popular astronomy marathon in the world. The goal of the contestants is to detect as many as 110 celestial objects from the Catalogue of Nebulae and Star Clusters of the French astronomer Charles Messier (1730 – 1817) in one night. These are the most interesting and beautiful celestial objects (Pleiades, Orion Nebula, Crab Nebula, Sombrero Galaxy, etc.). These are also the most beautiful objects of the deep sky and many are known from photos even to the general public not engaged in astronomy. The objects from the Messier catalog can be seen from the Northern Hemisphere, some during the summer, some during winter or other seasons, but it is interesting that all 110 can be seen in just one night, at the turn of winter into spring.
Venue: Fruška Gora – Letenka
