Memorial of Prof. Dr. Franja Fratrić
The Memorial of Prof. Dr. Franja Fratrić is a traditional winter race that includes three disciplines: the Handicap Half Marathon, the 5-kilometre Race, and the Half Marathon Relay. This sports event is organised in honour of the memory of the distinguished expert and professor who made an immeasurable contribution to the development of this competition format. The event represents an opportunity for runners and recreational athletes of all generations to gather at the end of the competitive season in the natural ambience by the Danube River. In addition to the athletic competition, the event nurtures a tradition of social gathering, and a lunch is provided for all participants after the race.
What makes this race unique is the “handicap” starting system. Unlike classic races where everyone starts at the same time, here rules are applied that enable fair competition between runners of different generations. All non-handicap competitors (seniors) start in the so-called “zero start,” while others start earlier, each at their calculated time. The winner is the one who crosses the finish line first, regardless of age.
