Liberta – The Birth of a City

July 17, 2022

In the finals of the Fortress of Peace programme arch, on 17 July, the first film saga about Novi Sad will be presented at the Petrovaradin Fortress – the big premiere of the film “Liberta – The Birth of a City”, directed by Gvozden Đurić and Žanko Tomić.

Liberta is an epic film saga that defines the city of Novi Sad and Vojvodina as a space where Serbian culture and tradition are most closely intertwined with the European ideals and challenges of the time. The historic trip to the Viennese court, where negotiations were to buy the status of a free city, turned into an exciting film adventure about two Germans and four Serbs who went to the “reigning Vienna” and finally, after a series of travails, without shedding a drop of blood, achieved freedom for their city. Thus, on 1 February 1748, Maria Theresa issued a charter by which the Petrovaradin Šanac was included in the list of free royal cities. She determined that its name should be NeoPlantea, Hungarian – Uj-Videgh, German – Neu-Satz, which the Serbs translated as Novi Sad, and the Greeks as Neophytes. The city gained the right to its own administrative bodies and court, as well as its independent government in the form of a mayor and a magistrate composed of 12 senators. Therefore, the citizens of Novi Sad won their freedom in a peaceful way and planted a new city in this area, the city emerging from peace.
