Jožef Kiš: The Man Who Reshaped Bačka

April 7 - April 21

On Tuesday, 7 April, starting at 7 p.m., the Museum of Vojvodina opened its doors to a special monographic exhibition dedicated to a figure who left an indelible mark on the history of our region. The exhibition Jožef Kiš: The Man Who Reshaped Bačka, by author Dr Mirjana Đekić, offers a unique insight into the life and work of a visionary whose engineering prowess transformed marshy terrain into the fertile plains we know today.

The Visionary Project of the Great Bačka Canal

Through a rich selection of plans, maps, and documents, the exhibition transports us back to the late 18th and early 19th centuries. The focus is on the most significant hydro-technical undertaking of that era – the construction of the Great Bačka (Francis) Canal. This grandiose project, conceived by Jožef Kiš, not only connected the Danube and Tisa rivers but fundamentally changed the way of life for the local population, enabling the rapid development of the economy and trade.

The Versatility and Lasting Legacy of Engineer Kiš

Beyond hydro-engineering, the display highlights Kiš’s versatility as an architect and surveyor. On display are representative plans for public buildings, churches, and school buildings, which are today preserved in the National Archives of Hungary in Budapest. The exhibition Jožef Kiš: The Man Who Reshaped Bačka authentically blends historical material with the story of a man whose immortality, according to his own epitaph, rests within the very waters of the Francis Canal. The exhibition is open to visitors until 21 April.
