Johann Strauss Fest

October 22

The Musical Connection Between Novi Sad and Vienna

The Johann Strauss Fest is organised in memory of the famous Austrian composer, conductor and violinist Johann Strauss the Younger, whose first concert in Novi Sad in 1847 marked the beginning of his artistic career. The event takes place at Kotek Castle in Futog, today the Agricultural School with Student Hostel. Arriving in Novi Sad at the age of 22 brought Strauss inspiration that was channeled into numerous works, including the lost fantasy “Memories of Novi Sad” (“Erinnerung an Neusatz”), based on Serbian folk motifs.

The Legend of the Creation of the Famous Composition

In honour of the author known as the “most musical mind of the 19th century”, the Johann Strauss Fest revives the memory of his stay and creative work. According to legend, the most popular composition “The Blue Danube” was created right here in Futog, while Strauss observed the Danube and the Srem bank from the castle of Count Kotek. Following his performances in Novi Sad, he continued his tour in Romania, Russia and America. This event dignifiedly connects historical heritage and art.
