Exhibition “Aksentije Marodić: In Search of Eternal Beauty”
In the year marking the bicentenary of the founding of Matica Srpska, the Gallery of Matica Srpska in Novi Sad presents the exhibition “Aksentije Marodić: In Search of Eternal Beauty”. This exhibition provides the most comprehensive insight into the oeuvre of a significant 19th-century Serbian artist and intellectual whose life and work are deeply connected with the development of this institution.
Artistic Oeuvre and European Influences
Throughout his life, Aksentije Marodić created unique works relying on late Nazarene artistic poetics, historicism, and realism. His artistic expression was shaped during his studies at the Vienna Academy and his travels through Italy, where he directly encountered works by masters such as Raphael, Leonardo da Vinci, and Guido Reni.
Monumental Iconostasis and Rich Collection
Visitors have the opportunity to view more than 110 exhibits from numerous public and private collections, many of which are being presented to the public for the first time. The anchor of the exhibition is the restored iconostasis of the church of the Kovilj Monastery, presented following a multi-year conservation project. The display is further enriched with contemporary multimedia content and an interactive geographical map tracking Marodić’s travels.
Accompanying Programmes and Catalogue
The exhibition is accompanied by a bilingual catalogue authored by Dr Snežana Mišić, two documentary films, and a specially designed family guide. Throughout the exhibition, weekend curator-led tours and thematic Friday evening programmes are organised for all audiences. The exhibition “Aksentije Marodić: In Search of Eternal Beauty” represents an exceptional opportunity for all art enthusiasts to explore a rich national cultural heritage.
