Sterijino Pozorje

May 26 - June 3

The Hub of National Dramatic Arts

Sterijino Pozorje is the most prestigious national drama and theatre festival, which has been nurturing and promoting Serbian dramatic creativity for decades. Founded in 1956 in honour of the great playwright Jovan Sterija Popović, the event has grown into an institution that shapes the theatrical scene and sets high standards of artistic expression in this part of Europe. During the festival, Novi Sad becomes a vibrant meeting point for the most prominent theatre creators and drama enthusiasts.

Tradition and Significance for Theatre Culture

The history of the festival is inextricably linked to the development of contemporary theatre. Its foundation involved the most eminent figures of Serbian culture, such as Ivo Andrić and Miloš Hadžić, who defined its clear objectives: to encourage dramatic literature and nurture a national theatrical style. Today, Sterijino Pozorje continues its mission of identifying top-tier performing arts values, serving as a beacon for theatrical institutions in their cultural and social endeavours.

Competition Programme and Selections

Each year, the festival audience has the opportunity to see the finest productions from professional theatres both from the country and abroad. The core of the competition programme consists of plays based on texts by domestic authors, as well as high-quality stagings of world classics performed by domestic ensembles. At the close of each edition, a five-member expert jury presents the Sterija Awards for the best artistic achievements in various categories, ranging from writing and directing to acting performances.
