Johan Strauss Festival
November 7
The Johan Strauss Festival is held in memory of the famous Austrian composer, conductor, and violinist Johann Strauss II, who held his first concert in Novi Sad in 1847. At the age of 22, Strauss came to Novi Sad, and from our city, he took several memories transformed into outstanding works. He composed “Sećanje na Novi Sad” (“Erinnerung an Neusatz”), a fantasy based on Serbian folk motifs. Unfortunately, this composition is lost, and no copies have been preserved. The most popular composition, “The Blue Danube,” according to legend, was created when Strauss was a guest at the estates of Count Chotek in Futog and Sremska Kamenica. The notes probably originated in Futog while the composer was looking at the Danube and the Srem side. After Novi Sad, he continued his tour in Romania and Russia, and soon after in America.
Venue: Chotek Castle in Futog (today’s Agricultural School with a student dormitory)
