Nikolich Neuzinsky Vineyards and Winery

Nikolich Neuzinsky vineyards are located near the Pan-European Corridor X, in the wider area of Novi Sad, between Kovilj and Gardinovci, in the lowland part of the Vojvodina wine-growing region, which is bordered on one side by the Fruška Gora mountain and the river Danube, and on the other by the Titel plateau and the river Tisza. They are at the same altitude (80 m) and at approximately the same latitude as the vineyards of the famous French Bordeaux region (Bordeaux 44° 50′ 26″ N. / Kovilj: 45° 12′ 33″ N). They have a special microclimate, with a rose of winds, which throughout the year brings freshness to the long rows of vines.

The vineyard plots were formed in the center of a small family estate, on a gently undulating terrain shaped by the waves of the Danube for centuries. On each of them there is a different, unrepeatable combination of specific types of soil that change at almost every step. Similar characteristics Similar characteristics can be seen in the famous Napa Valley in California, which the World Atlas of Wine said is the most prestigious wine region in the world. This secret code of terroir, given by nature, gives uniqueness to the grapes, but also to the wines that our experienced cellarmen skillfully create from them.

Precious gifts of nature bind. A variety of plant and animal life has been preserved on the estate. In the vineyard, no pesticides are used to control weeds, but only traditional procedures, with a lot of human work. The use of plant disease control agents is kept to a minimum (la lutte raisonée) and is carried out with high precision, as evidenced by the mushrooms growing in the grass at the very edge of the vineyard plots. The sumptuous natural surroundings are treated with equal care.

Numerous side branches of the Danube flow in the close proximity of the vineyards. There among the water lilies one of the largest carp hatcheries in Europe lies hidden. From the nearby Krčedinsko-Gardinovačka isle, where hundreds of semi-wild horses and cows of old breeds live in their free space, whole herds occasionally wander by and curiously observe the workers in the vineyards. When the water level of the Danube rises, roe deer from the coastal forests also find refuge there.

The Nikolich Neuzinsky vineyards form the central part and are at the same time the initiator of the renewal of the vineyard oasis in the far south of Bačka, which once stretched from the famous Kovilj monastery from the 13th century, to Gardinovci. For centuries, it formed a spatial, administrative and viticultural unit with Karlovci – the capital of the Fruška Gora vineyards, which is located on the opposite, Srem side of the Danube river. This is evidenced by old Austrian topographical maps from the 18th century, on which the vineyards are precisely drawn, but also by the traditions passed down from generation to generation about the ships and barges with which the quality wine made from grapes from that area was transported all the way to Vienna. Laza Kostić from Kovilj, son of a Tschaikisten captain, doctor of law, diplomat and writer of the poem Santa Maria della Salute, whose lines are considered the most beautiful in Serbian poetry, toasted with that wine.

From grapes from that area, which some call Danube harmony, and others Danube fantasy, wines are made in the small family winery Nikolich Neuzinsky, the only one winery in Novi Sad, located in the wider city center, in 12 Puškinova Street, in the immediate vicinity of the small Egység castle – one of the centers of the European Capital of Culture. In the cellars of the winery are aged bottles of wine Таmyanica, Тhe Secret Code (Merlot), The Monk, Santa Maria…, Portcaber, Rector’s wine, Vignerac… Some of them received high marks and medals at the most prestigious world evaluation in London, the Decanter World Wine Awards.
