Vinum Winery

Vinum Winery (Vinarija Vinum) was founded in 2000 by Professor Milan Ubavić, MD PhD, the owner of the Medlab laboratories. From then on, the modern story of love for grapes and wines has begun, which continues today. The tradition exists in this story, only here it is not measured by generations of winemakers’ ancestors, but acts in the Vojvodina way, worthy of a Balašević’s ballad. Thanks to the chains of the fertile Bačka land, Dina Stražimešterov, maternal grandfather of Professor Milan Ubavić, MD PhD, enabled his grandson to realize his life plans, which at that time were not related to wine.

Many years later, the winemaker Ubavić repaid his grandfather by naming the sparkling wine made from Grašac, the first of its kind in Serbia, after him – Dina. Thus, the tradition continues to live here in an unexpected, and yet unique way – in every bottle and glass of sparkling wine. There are several events used to measure time at the Vinum Winery. The central one is from 2007, when they planted their own grapevine stems in the vineyards on the Čerat and Ešikovac stretches, then the situation when in 2011 they became the first winery to have cooling tanks, or when in 2015 they found their permanent address in Karlovačkog mira Street.

We should not forget the first great international success from 2004, when the wine of this house, Frankovka (vintage 2002) was awarded a silver medal at one of the most important international wine competitions in the world – Vinalis in Paris. Everything that happened later was the proof that the award was not a coincidence.

The basis for the wines of the Vinum Winery is the following assortment of grapes[1]: Grašac, Sauvignon Blanc, Traminac, Chardonnay, Muscat yellow, Pinot Noir and Frankovka. The wines on offer are: Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Dina (sparkling wine), Mustra (the only semi-dry wine), Grašac Beli, Rose, Frankovka, Pinot Noir, Bermet (white) and Bermet (red). These are high-quality wines made from their own grapes of controlled quality. The possibilities for wine production here are much greater than the realized production, precisely because the quality of the wine, and not the quantity, is the imperative. The credit belongs to the team gathered by Prof. Ubavić, which in connection with the production of wine is led by the technologist Jovica Urošević.

The wines of this house are on the list of the Best Serbian – top class wines with controlled geographical origin – wines with a purple mark of quality and origin run by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Water Management of the Republic of Serbia: Vinum Sauvignon Blanc (2012 and 2013) and Vinum Italian Riesling (2013).

The quality of the wine is also confirmed by the awards, among which the most significant ones won in the last two years are singled out here: The Balkans International Wine Competition (BIWC), Sofia 2020 (gold for Chardonnay 2017, silver for Pinot Noir 2017 and Rose 2019); World Wine Awards – Decanter London 2020 (silver for Pinot Noir 2017 and Frankovka 2017); Grand Wine Evaluation of Serbia 2020 in the category of “White still wines from local non-aromatic varieties” (gold for Grašac Beli 2018) and Grand Wine Evaluation of Serbia 2021 in the category of “White still wines from local non-aromatic varieties” (silver for Grašac Beli 2019); in the category of “White still wines from international non-aromatic varieties” (big gold for Chardonnay 2018).
