Welcome to Novi Sad – the city of festivals!

June 26, 2019

Tourism in Novi Sad has all year round season, and you can easily come in January and stay around the whole year – because festivities in Novi Sad never stop! However, summertime is when festivals happen one after another, after another, after another… the city never sleeps, and the good vibe never stops. Don’t you believe us? Come and check!

Serbian people certainly know how to enjoy life and have fun. Novi Sad has not only developed its identity of a festival city, but also the identity of the locals has developed through festivals. It is the city that embraces different cultures, people from far and wide, young and old, with different tastes and styles, ways of socialising, learning and having fun. Events and festivals help the city in its spreading of knowledge, culture and art, particularly in the times that are very important for us – we are the European Youth Capital in 2019 and we will be the European Capital of Culture in 2021!

So what’s on repertoire this summer?

Summer festival season starts with the OPENS Youth Fair which offers exhibitions of a wide range of tourism stakeholders – academic institutions, travel agencies, tourism organisations, both national and international. This time, we have guests from Germany and Russia that will also be part of the fair. When the night falls, concerts await. They are such a nice overture to what then follows. Annual Exit music festival kicks off in early July and lasts for four days, taking place in a truly exciting venue; seventeen century fortress by the Danube River. It offers a plethora of music genres across many stages scattered across the fort. The adventure of discovering small stages tucked a bit further away from the main stages adds up to the whole festival atmosphere. This summer Exit starts with stunning fireworks and The Cure concert at the Main stage and DJ set by Carl Cox at the Dance arena. And then the line up unfolds… and the party goes on… until sunrise, and beyond.

As we keep saying, all cultures welcome! It has been a whole decade since Brazilian culture is showcased over the few days every August. Art, sports, music, food, dance and costumes, are so very entertaining and truly absorbing. The carnival parade will shake the grounds of the Novi Sad old town, exhibiting the yellows and greens of Brazil coupled with movements of capoeira and samba dancers and percussionists. Don’t miss this unique spectacle and be here to welcome DJ Patife from Sao Paolo who will bring us some funky, jungly, drum’n’bassy beats.

Late August is reserved for literature. Poetry and prose are read from various places in town, at squares, balconies and other interesting spots. The International Literary festival gathers around a hundred authors, and the programme is accompanied by the music of young musicians.

Novi Sad citizens are big foodies. We serve good food but we also invite good foods to come to us. Therefore, you should land on the Food Planet at the main sqaure of Novi Sad, which is inhabited by 30 different cuisines over several weeks of September.

Surely there is more to this. Check our calendar of events and see whatever big or small festival suits you. One thing is for sure – there will always be something going on in town! Welcome!
