Irig (Fruška gora)

Irig is an old settlement that was first mentioned in historical sources in the 13th century, and tradition says that it was an important center in the 15th and 16th centuries when Serbian despots, including the Vuk the Fiery Dragon, ruled Srem. The economic power of the place grew starting from the middle of the 18th century, first on the basis of an imperial privilege that gave the right to income from as many as two fairs a year, and then on vine and fruit plantations. At the beginning of the 18th century, Irig had the status of the center of the Serbs in Srem and the “capital of Fruška Gora”, so it is quite clear why the oldest Serbian Reading Room (1842) was founded there.

Of the sixteen monasteries in Fruška Gora, created in the period from the 15th to the 18th century, eight were built in the surroundings of Irig (Krušedol, Novo Hopovo, Staro Hopovo, Vrdnička Ravanica, Velika Remeta, Mala Remeta, Grgeteg and Jazak).

The Serbs built as many as three Orthodox churches: the Church of the Assumption (18th century), the Church of St. Theodore Tiron (18th century) and the Church of St. Nicholas (18th century). The Roman Catholic Parish Church of All Saints was built in the 19th century.

The plague in Srem in the 18th century cut the population of Irig in half, and the phylloxera infestation at the end of the 19th century destroyed the vineyards of Irig. The production of Irish wines began to recover to a significant extent after World War II, as evidenced by the establishment of the Irish Cellar in 1930, and the tradition of producing famous Irish wines continues today by: Kovačević Winery, Mačkov Podrum and Krstašica Winery (Irig).

If you decide to stay for a few days, you can find accommodation in Milin Lagum or Fruška Gora Guesthouse.
