Mountaineering associations

Despite being settled in the plain, the residents of Novi Sad, as well as Vojvodina as a whole, have a love of hiking and they take care of their two mountains – Fruška Gora and Vršac Mountains – with great dedication. Mountaineering in these parts has a long tradition. The first mountaineering organisation – the Fruška Gora Mountaineering Society, was founded back in 1924 at the Masna Ćupa site near the Fruška Gora settlement of Bukovac near Novi Sad. Its successor, the Mountaineering Association of Vojvodina, today has about thirty basic mountaineering organisations with more than 3 thousand members.

Mountaineering associations in Novi Sad are organisations that bring mountaineering and hiking enthusiasts together. Their activities include the organisation of one-day and several-day hiking campaigns, from easy walks for beginners to international expeditions to the highest peaks of the world. In addition, the activity of mountaineering associations is aimed at organising sports competitions such as trekking and orienteering, education and training of its members, arranging and marking hiking trails, but also at spreading environmental awareness among people and responsible behaviour during their stay in nature.

Some mountaineering associations from Novi Sad own mountain huts on Fruška Gora, which, in addition to providing accommodation and food for mountaineers, also serve as a starting point for numerous mountaineering activities, as well as for socialising and exchanging experiences.
