European Cycling Route – EuroVelo 6
EuroVelo 6, also known as the “River Route”, is one of the most popular and longest cycling routes in Europe. It stretches from the Atlantic Ocean, more precisely from Saint Nazare in France, to the Black Sea, in Constanta (Romania). The route follows the course of three major European rivers: the Loire, the Rhine, and the Danube, providing cyclists with a unique experience of exploring diverse landscapes, cultures, and historic sites. The total length of the route is about 4,700 kilometres.
The part of the EuroVelo 6 route that passes through Serbia, especially through Vojvodina, is an extremely attractive area for cyclists. The route enters Serbia near Bački Breg, follows the course of the Danube, and passes through numerous cities and villages, offering beautiful views of the river, fertile plains, and rich cultural heritage.
Through Novi Sad and its surroundings, the EuroVelo 6 route follows the embankment on the left bank of the Danube all the way to the Varadinska Duga Bridge, where the route crosses to the right, Srem side of the river, continuing to Belgrade: Begečka Jama – Fisherman’s Island – 1300 Kaplara – Balzakova – Bulevar Despota Stefana – Sunčani Kej – Kej Žrtava Racije – Varadinska Duga Bridge – Beogradska – Preradovićeva – Karlovački Drum. Begečka Jama – Varadinska Duga Bridge part of the route is almost entirely a proper bicycle path.
Cyclists can enjoy a ride along the Danube, visit the Begečka jama Nature Park and refresh themselves in a čarda (traditional riverside restaurant), explore the cultural and historical core of Novi Sad and the Petrovaradin Fortress, and then continue towards the picturesque, baroque town of Sremski Karlovci.
The EuroVelo 6 Cycling Route is well marked, with standardised signs indicating the direction of movement and distance. These signs are usually blue with white letters, a bicycle symbol, and a route number (EV6). For ease of navigation and safer driving, cyclists are advised to download the route navigation on the official EuroVelo website.
