Cycling route to Rumenka
Rumenka is a settlement in the vicinity of Novi Sad. You can find the Serbian Orthodox Church of Saints Peter and Paul from the 18th century, the Hungarian Reformed Church from 1836 and the Catholic Church of Saints Peter and Paul from 1780. There is also the Rumenka Cultural Centre, which organises numerous cultural and art programs. The most famous local event is the Rumenačka Pihtijada (the aspic-making contest).
Rumenka has recently been connected to the city by a bicycle path that follows the Danube-Tisa-Danube canal. The trail is built on an embankment next to the canal and is specific in that it does not intersect with other roads so that there is no potential danger from motor vehicles and it is safe for cyclists of all ages. Given the absence of other traffic, as well as the fact that the route is set entirely in a plain, in nature, next to the water, the ride on this trail is extremely easy and pleasant.
As the beginning of the bicycle path is located at the intersection of Bulevar Evrope with the canal, it is best to reach it by the following route through Novi Sad: Futoška Street – Hajduk Veljkova Street – Rumenačka Street – Bulevar Evrope. On the roundabout, which is located before the bridge over the canal, it turns from the Bulevar Evrope in the direction of Aptiv and comes to a bicycle path that leads to Rumenka following the embankment along the canal. The path that accompanies the DTD canal is about 5 kilometres long.
It is possible to extend the ride a little over the bridge in the direction of Kisač and visit Sašin salaš (traditional Vojvodina farmstead), known for their slogan “If you’re in a hurry, please don’t stop here”. At the entrance to the farm there is a beautifully landscaped courtyard where Lilika the bichon and Lenka the fawn reside, and there are other numerous animals in the mini zoo as well – different types of geese, ducks, pheasants, and parrots. In addition to animals, a playground has been built for the kids, and the salaš is pet-friendly. Sašin salaš is also known for its weekly menu, and its venison stew.
Route length: 13 kilometres in one direction (8 kilometres through the city + 5 kilometres along the canal)
