Rakia festival in Kovilj– “DIRGE TO MULBERRY”

The aim of the event is to affirm the traditional method of mulberry “rakija” (brandy) production through organising of the competition for selection of the best natural home-made brandy. Since 1996 this has been the way to draw the attention of a wider public to the need to protect and promote quality “rakijas” that are produced in Vojvodina. “Rakija” made of mulberry, known as “dudara”, “dudinjača” or “dudovača”, the brandy of exceptionally strong smell and taste, typical for Vojvodina region and rescuing it from a slow disappearing is in the forefront of this event. In addition, the event is aimed at promoting tourism in Vojvodina and traditional Vojvodina values so that within diverse cultural-artistic programme there are also organised tours to a famous Kovilj Monastery, birth house of Laza Kostić, Hunters’ Cabin, “Tikvara” and paradise arms of the Danube. The visitors can enjoy in sports fishing and competition called “Small – big fishermen”, competition for the best “strudel”, ride in fiacre and boats, tasting of delicious home-made produce from the countryside.
